Starting Out in Finishing Carpentry

I started finishing carpentry full-time in January 2024 with Martinwood Finishing Ltd, working on custom homes through Echo House Finishing in Calgary. Walking onto a high-end build for the first time was humbling. You hear about tolerances; you don't really understand them until your trim has to land on a wall that everyone else has already signed off on.

The first lesson was patience. The second was that the small stuff — a clean miter, a square cut, a reveal that doesn't wander — is the whole job. Anyone can put trim on a wall. Putting it on so the homeowner never thinks about it again is the work.
